Residences leap to help of diverted passengers

Residences staff at the University of Dundee leapt into action within a couple of hours of the terrorist attacks on America, to accommodate stranded and diverted air passengers.

Rooms which had been prepared for single students at West Park Villas were swiftly adjusted to take 136 passengers from American Airlines and Air Canada who arrived in two waves between 9pm and 11pm.

Front of house manager at West Park Jean Forbes said: "It was a case of all hands on deck. The staff responded tremendously well, pulling out the stops to do what they could to help. People were running around with extra pillows and cups, a buffet was swiftly prepared for the passengers who were tired and bemused with what had been happening. Many of the passengers were Germans with little or no English."

Every room at West Park Villas has a television and a telephone which were in full use by all as passengers tried to establish contact with relatives and find out what had been going on.

Staff worked well into the night but were back at 6.45am on Wednesday to organise breakfasts.

The passengers included over 100 people on an Air Canada flight from Frankfurt to Calgary which was diverted in mid air and landed in Glasgow. A further 20 people were with American Airlines on a Glasgow Chicago flight.

Food managers George Mackenzie and Sturrock Richie were quick to organise an emergency buffet to make the hungry and weary passengers more comfortable. Meanwhile housekeeping staff Pat Carnegie and Kirsten Sarec were diverted from Belmont Hall to prepare rooms.

It is unclear how long the unexpected guests will stay at the villas but many were taking advantage of their unscheduled stop to visit the city centre this morning.
