New Principal welcomes freshers

New Principal and Vice Chancellor of the University of Dundee Sir Alan Langlands will welcome some 2,000 freshers to the University on Monday (2 October) when he heads the platform party at the Caird Hall welcoming ceremony.

In one of his first official public engagements since taking over the Principalship on 1 September, Sir Alan will give a warm welcome to his fellow freshers.

The students will also be officially welcomed to the city by Dundee Lord Provost Helen Wright.

An all day induction programme will cover a range of useful topics including web-based learning sources and IT, personal safety, exercise and sport, budgeting, time management, careers and enterprise.

Freshers week continues with an international students orientation course on Tuesday, a postgraduate induction course on Wednesday, city tours, barbeque, the chance of trying various sports and societies fayres as well as the usual lively programme of music and disco events put on by Dundee University Students Association.

The Principal of the University of Dundee, Sir Alan Langlands, speaking earlier today at the Caird Hall gave a warm welcome to the students. He said:

"Everyone here is delighted that you have chosen to study at Dundee. The staff of the University are committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship and pure and applied research. Without you, the students, there would be no University and we are determined to create a climate in which every one of you can reach your full potential. We want your time here to be fulfilling and enjoyable."

Sir Alan also encouraged students to play a part in the University's many clubs and societies and to enjoy life in the City and the surrounding area. He said:

"Dundee Contemporary Arts and the Rep are real highlights and the University itself has excellent playing fields and a multi-purpose sports centre."

On a more serious note, he said:

"It is your responsibility to organise your own life here - managing your time and striking the right balance between study and your social life. The University will provide guidance and support through our personal tutor system and our student support agencies but ultimately you are responsible."

Finally, he said:

"The next few years will be one of the most challenging and rewarding periods of your life - I wish you great success in all aspects of University life. Enjoy Dundee."
