Not only did University of Dundee law student Mark McLaughlin gain a first class honours degree, but he successfully juggled family life with full-time study and part-time work at Ninewells Hospital as a diagnostics radiographer.

Mark is one of several students scooping prizes and medals today (Wednesday 1 October) at a reception hosted by University of Dundee Rector Fred MacAulay and Deputy Principal Professor Geoff Ward. The ceremony is held each year to recognise excellence in the Faculty of Law & Accountancy.

Mark, from Lochee, Dundee, is the father of two boys aged four and six and is now taking the Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice at the University. In June 2004 he will take up a post as trainee solicitor with Thorntons.

This evening he will receive the Faculty of Law & Accountancy Dean’s Medal from Fred MacAulay for his outstanding efforts.

The Dean’s Medal is awarded only occasionally to students whom in the Dean’s opinion have made outstanding and exemplary efforts in their studies.

Mark said, "The last four years have been so busy they have just disappeared in a flash. It’s all been worthwhile though and I’m very pleased to have been awarded the Dean’s Medal."

The prize-winners reception will be held in the Tower Conference Suite, Tower Building, 5.30pm to 7.30pm. Representatives of many of the donor companies will also be present.

Mr MacAulay and Professor Ward will welcome the students to the reception and congratulate them on their success.
