Professor Geoffrey Barton, has been appointed to the Chair of Bioinformatics at the Scottish Informatics Mathematics Biology and Statistics Centre - a joint venture in mathematical and computational modelling between the Universities of Dundee and Abertay, Dundee.

Professor Geoff Barton said: "I'm very happy to come to Dundee where there is an incredibly dynamic research environment for world class researchers. There are currently two major expanding areas in science, biological sciences and computing. I'm involved in the most exciting part of science - bringing these two together - and I'm now in the most exciting place to do it."

Geoff's research aims to develop high performance computer methods to identify the most interesting proteins from the flood of information coming from biological research worldwide. A further goal is to develop computer modelling techniques that make use of the latest advances in software to generate accurate models of proteins and other molecules without the need for experiment.

These techniques will be applied to aid general understanding of the function of the 35,000 to 60,000 genes in the Human Genome as well as to specific proteins relevant to disease.

Professor Barton will be based in the Wellcome Trust Biocentre at the University of Dundee.
