Forensics for nurses

Nurses at the University of Dundee are taking practical sessions in forensic medicine to help them identify patients who are suffering injury due to assault or abuse.

Students who are training to be nurses and doctors are required to analyse patients' clothing and wounds to identify possible trauma. The students are trained to interpret injury patterns to allow them to identify patients who might be the victims of serial abuse or attack. They are also exploring forensic science and criminal psychology which are closely related with forensic medicine.

Dr Sadler, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Forensic Medicine at the University of Dundee said: " Paramedics, nurses and doctors are in the front line dealing with victims of trauma. These are the people who first examine them - it is vital that they appreciate that there could be crucial evidence for the courts right in front of them."/ENDS
