Karen Rigby, a second year Economic Studies student at the University of Dundee, came 1st in the 50m butterfly at the British University Championships in Weston-Super-Mare at the weekend.

Karen, from Broughty Ferry, Dundee, is an Excel scholar at the University's Institute of Sport & Exercise. The Excel Sports Scholarship Programme is dedicated to supporting elite student athletes as they combine academic study with high levels of training and competing. The programme provides: financial assistance with coaching, training and competing; access to excellent training and competition facilities; a programme tailored to the individual needs of each athlete; access to Sports Science support and a high level support from individual scholarship mentors.

The annual round of sports competing between universities started last month and carries on until June 2004. The round includes individual championships (e.g. skiing), team championships based on tournaments and team championships based on leagues and knockout rounds. In February, the top Scottish universities will go forward to compete at a UK-wide level in the British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) Championships.

This weekend's win takes the University team up to 24 points.
