Scottish coalition politics under scrutiny

Ross Finnie MSP and Minister for Environment and Rural Development will give a public lecture at the University of Dundee today (Friday 14 November) on coalition politics.

The event is the third in the annual New Scotland: New Politics? lecture series run by the Department of Politics. The presentations feature established political figures discussing issues relating to post-devolution Scotland.

Mr Finnie will discuss coalition politics which has characterised Scottish devolution and Executive. He will talk about forming a coalition, the workings of a coalition, devolution settlement and new coalitions. Mr Finnie will also consider the maturing Parliament and maturing Scotland.

In his ministerial role, the Liberal Democrat is responsible for the environment and natural heritage, land reform, water, sustainable development, agriculture, fisheries, and rural development including aquaculture and forestry.

Dr Norrie MacQueen, Head of the Department of Politics, said that he was delighted that Ross Finnie had accepted the invitation to participate in the New Scotland: New Politics? lecture series.

He said, "Our politics students very much appreciate the fact that senior politicians in Scotland are able to visit Dundee and give them an insight into the sharp end of Scottish politics."

The lecture will take place on Friday 14 November at 1pm in the Baxter Conference Suite/Training Complex, First Floor, Tower Building, University of Dundee.
