Politician's lab visit

Photo opportunity 10am, Monday 24 November. Please report to Ninewells main reception and contact Elizabeth Knight on extension 33094.

Dr David McGivern, a scientist at the University of Dundee will welcome Ernie Ross MP for Dundee West to his lab on Monday 24 November to show him a day in the life of a scientist.

Ernie Ross was paired with David McGivern in the Division of Pathology and Neuroscience by the Royal Society in an initiative to foster better understanding of science in parliament.

Mr Ross will spend the morning with David and will be given an overview of the research in Dr Rachel Fearns' laboratory where David works before meeting the Dean of Medicine Professor Brian Burchell.

David's research focuses on respiratory syncytial virus - a major cause of respiratory illness in young children, which is responsible for thousands of hospitalisations per year.

The scientists intend to ask Mr Ross about some science issues that they feel Westminster should be addressing such as investment in the public understanding of science, the funding of science and about the lack of positions available for young scientists to start and pursue a career.

David will spend four days at Westminster from 1-4 December shadowing Mr Ross and attending a series of lectures and events including a meeting of the House of Commons Science and Technology Select Committee.
