Imparting knowledge

Photo opportunity 5.20pm, Wednesday 14 May, Baxter Conference Suite, 1st floor Tower Building, University of Dundee.

A presentation ceremony will be held for University of Dundee students who have been sharing their knowledge with local school pupils - joining a classroom group on a weekly basis and establishing strong links between young school pupils and higher education.

The scheme is designed to raise awareness of higher education of both teachers and pupils within local schools by using students as ambassadors. The students aim to raise aspirations in young people and motivate them to continue their education after the age of 16.

Student tutors assist with class projects, instruct in the use of computers, tutor groups in their specialist subject, help with class assignments and discuss issues with pupils. Some students start their own projects in the classroom giving them invaluable experience if they are considering entering the teaching profession.

Students from the University of Dundee have been in schools in Dundee, Angus, Fife and Perth and Kinross. The University of Dundee's Vice Principal Professor James Calderhead will present the students with their certificates at ceremonies on 14 May and 21 May 2003.

William Revolta, a third year Fine Art student who plans to become an art teacher said: "This experience has given me a great insight into primary school teaching, what the pupils are like and how various subjects are taught to that age group. It has been great getting to know the pupils in the class - they are all just a bit older than my younger brother with some great characters among them."
