Royal Scottish Academy prize

Caroline Hamilton, a fourth year student in the School of Fine Art at the University of Dundee has won the Royal Scottish Academy's Carnegie travelling scholarship for her "Painting no.37" at the Scottish show of graduating students in Edinburgh this year.

Professor Alan Robb, Head of the School of Fine Art said: "This is the most competitive of awards in student painting. Most abstract painting tends to be predictable but Caroline's isn't. Her work takes risks. It is intuitive and spontaneous and it certainly stands out from other students' work."

Caroline: "I see painting as a way of making sense of the world around me. There is more to painting than merely looking nice. There is a need to communicate. As Gerard Richter said: "By conveying a thing through the medium of language, you change it."

"The £200 will assist her move to Paris where she hopes to set up a studio.".ENDS
