Discoveries on your doorstep

Photo opportunity 12.30pm, Friday 12 March, Sensation Science Centre, Greenmarket, Dundee.

Why do we gnash our teeth in pain? How can calculus help cure cancer? Why do fish drink? How can feeding your gut bacteria help you travel without the trots? Why is tobacco smoke addictive? How do babies adapt to life between feeds?

The latest discoveries at the University of Dundee are being taken out on the road with the first public exhibition of these discoveries opening at Sensation Science Centre this Friday (12 March).

This unique exhibition of posters and images gives a fascinating glimpse into current research across 37 topics from neuroscience and biomathematics to biology and computing.

Four of the University's newest professors will give 10 minute presentations on Friday on their latest findings and area of expertise.

Mark Chaplain will ask if calculus can cure cancer before Ann Burchell explains how an infant adapts to life between feeds. David Balfour will look at tobacco dependence and John Cummings will tell the audience why they should remember to feed their good bacteria.

Nearly 20 S5 and S6 pupils from Craigie High School, Lochgelly High School and Braeview Academy will attend the opening to hear about the latest discoveries at the University of Dundee.

Paul Jennings, Head of Sensation Science Centre said: "I am delighted to welcome the latest discoveries exhibition from the University of Dundee to Sensation Science Centre. This is a great opportunity for the public and especially young people during science week to see the amazing discoveries that people in this City are making."

The exhibition will run at Sensation Science Centre from Friday 12 March until 30th April.
