Primary children assisted by leading scientist

One of the UK's leading bioscientists at the University of Dundee is inspiring Dundee's primary school children to find out more about science.

Director of the Wellcome Trust Biocentre Professor Sir Philip Cohen - whose discoveries have pushed forward the understanding of global diseases - has been an interested and inspirational visitor to Gowriehill Primary School's Science Club over the past two years.

Now Professor Cohen has made science more accessible to over 100 pupils at Gowriehill by financially supporting visits to the school by three interactive science workshops - StarLab, MadLab and Good Vibrations.

Professor Cohen's involvement means that every pupil at Gowriehill who is involved in studying scientific topics will be able to take part in hands on experiments to whet their scientific appetites.

The children's enthusiasm for science has led to the school organising a Science Week, featuring specific scientific challenges for each class, to be held from Monday 19 to Friday 23 March. Parents and friends of the school will be able to see the fruits of the pupil's scientific labours at an Open Evening on Thursday 22 March, which Sir Philip has agreed to open.

Head Teacher at Gowriehill Mrs Lorna Ferry said " The personal help and attention of a scientist of Sir Philip's stature means a great deal to the school and is an inspiration to the children. We're delighted and very grateful for his interest and involvement in our scientific activities. Who knows one of today's primary pupils may be one of tomorrow's leading scientists.
