"Single Handed" doctors

The University of Dundee is presenting a unique exhibition of photography depicting the isolated lifestyle of general practitioners in remote areas of Scotland. Commissioned by Professor John Bain, of the University of Dundee with photographs by Rosie Donovan, "Single Handed" is a sociological study of GPs in our rural environment.

Photographs of doctors, against the backdrop of stunning Scottish landscapes, accompany their stories explaining the importance of this type of medical practice and the contribution they make to the inhabitants of the highlands, islands and other remote rural areas of Scotland.

John Bain is a Professor of General Practice at the University of Dundee. He is keenly interested in the 'art of general practice', and has written nextensively about doctor-patient communication. For him single-handed doctors embody values which emphasise the doctor- patient relationship and continuity of care. In teaching medical students and young doctors, he stresses the holistic skills required in the development and exploration of human caring and compassion.

Rosie Donovan is a Glasgow-born photographer who has lived in Canada since 1972. She studied photography at Beal School of Art at the University of Western Ontario.

Rosie is a passionate observer of people, capturing the essence of her subjects, meticulously posing them to reflect their personalities, lifestyles and interests. She works exclusively in black and white, using only available light.

Rosie Donovan's exhibitions have toured extensively. Major venues include The Canadian Museum of Civilization, The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall (for Fotofeis), The Canadian Embassy, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.
