Design student's "spectacular" success

A University of Dundee student will be enjoying a work experience trip in De Rigo, Italy this summer after beating off rivals from across the UK to win a national spectacle design competition. As winner of Dollond and Aitchison's National Student SpeX Competition, Andy Sweet from York, receives £1,000 prize money and a further £1,000 goes to his University department.

The 21 year old, fourth year jewellery and metalwork student at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art will attend a congratulatory brunch in April to launch the company's 250th anniversary range that his designs inspired. Andy will have the rare opportunity to see his designs developed and manufactured during his week long trip to De Rigo this summer and will also see his designs on the high street very soon.

"Such a prestigious national competition was a golden opportunity to introduce spectacle design into the course since there is definitely a huge amount of scope in this area," said Roger Morris course director. "The trip to De Rigo is going to be an absolutely fantastic experience for Andy." The department is planning to spend its £1,000 on materials plus a piece of permanent equipment to mark Andy's achievement./ends
