Lord Lieutenant presents Queen's Award

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY: 3.00pm, Thursday 3 June, River Rooms, 9th Floor Tower Building, University of Dundee

Lord Lieutenant, John Letford will present the highly prestigious Queen's Award for Enterprise to the Centre for Energy, Petroleum, Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP) of the University of Dundee.

The Centre has been recognised in the international trade category for its exports of delivering courses to international students and for the growth of these exports during the last three years - 90% of the Centre's income comes from delivering courses to international students. The Centre is one of the few law schools in the UK to achieve such a high proportion of international income and achieve this award in the international trade category.

The Lord Lieutenant and the Centre's Director Dr Philip Andrews-Speed took the opportunity to display the award in front of the Adriatic XI oil rig in Dundee’s port. An amazing site on the Dundee skyline the rig moves later this week to sunnier waters in the Caribbean.

The CEPMLP provides advanced postgraduate education and training of the highest quality in energy and natural resources law and policy to young and mid-career professionals from the UK, the EU and around the world.

Dr Philip Andrews-Speed said, "Over the last ten years we have established ourselves as the leading international postgraduate institution in the field of energy and natural resources law and policy. It is an honour to receive this award from the Lord Lieutenant and it shows that effective financial performance can sit comfortably alongside excellence in teaching and research."

Dr Andrews-Speed's predecessor as Director of the Centre, Professor Thomas Waelde has been appointed as a Director of the Advanced Seminar, 2004, at the Hague Academy of International Law. The Hague International Law Programme is the world's most prestigious educational and training event each year. Participants of the seminar are expected to grow in time to be the world's leading scholars.

This is the first time the University of Dundee has won a Queen's Award for Enterprise. The University was awarded a Queen's Anniversary prize for keyhole surgery in 1998.
