Cycling the country with a Euphonium

a photo of joe

Photo opportunity Saturday 24th July, Land's End Point, 4pm (and along the route by arrangement with University Press Office on 01382 344910).

A medical student from the University of Dundee will brass it out this summer as he cycles from Land's End to John O'Groats with a brass Euphonium on his back playing in concerts with brass bands on his way north every evening of his journey.

The budding doctor, musician and athlete is combining his many talents to raise money for the Institute for Cardiovascular Research at the University of Dundee's Medical School where he is training to be a doctor.

Joe from Sedbergh is a second year medical student. He juggles many hobbies including Fell Running and speaking Spanish and Italian. His passion for cycling and playing the euphonium inspired him to make the unusual combination and raise money for heart disease research.

Joe will launch his tour tomorrow on Wednesday 21st July when he will play a concert with the Kirkby Lonsdale Town Band in the Bull Hotel in Sedbergh. After that he will be appearing in 13 brass concerts as he makes his way north including Weston Super Mare, Harrogate, Hartlepool and right up in the North of Scotland in Turriff. (full itinerary below.)

Joe says: "I'm really excited about the trip and can’t wait to get started. I appreciate the value of good health and I feel it's important to support heart disease research and the push for improved health."

The "Euphonothon" is due to finish in John O'Groats on Friday 13th August.

Joe is a member of Kendal Athletics Club and Dundee Hawkhill Harriers and has competed for England at Mountain Running eight times. He finished ninth in the World Junior Mountain Running Championships in Innsbruck, Austria in September 2002. Paul Hewitt Cycles, in Leyland have sponsored Joe by giving him a Cheviot touring bike for the trip.

Anyone wishing to sponsor Joe can send cheques made out to the University of Dundee to TICR campaign, External Relations, University of Dundee, Dundee DD1 4HN marked "Euphonothon".
