Graduation 2003

The University of Dundee's graduation will commence on Thursday 10th July with a record number of students graduating - over 3,000. Families will travel from all over the UK and countries across the world to watch the University Chancellor Sir James Black dub their graduates with degrees.

For a small number of students, those receiving postgraduates, this will be their second graduation ceremony but for one Vanessa Lawrence it will be an extra special second time in the Caird Hall. She is Director General of the Ordnance Survey and will be conferred with an honorary degree this year after taking a postgraduate degree from the University of Dundee in Remote Sensing in 1981.

Nobel Prize winning poet Seamus Heaney joins the roll call of honours this year in Dundee with local entrepreneur Peter Baillie, Michael Gordon, inventor of the cardiology patient simulator, and Sir Tom McKillop, the Chief Executive of the world's fifth largest pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca.

Thursday 10 July

10.30am Graduation ceremony for the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry and the Faculty of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design.

The University will confer honorary degrees upon

Michael Gordon from the University of Miami. Professor Gordon is the inventor of the cardiology patient simulator Harvey that the University of Dundee is pioneering in medical teaching throughout the UK.

Peter Baillie, Chairman of DCA and graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design will receive his honour for commitment and contribution to the visual arts in Dundee.

Friday 11 July

10.30am Graduation ceremony for the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Education and Social Work.

The University will confer honorary degrees upon

Seamus Heaney. A Nobel prize winner who has been publishing poetry since 1966, Heaney will be honoured for his contribution to literature and his example of moderation and integrity.

John and Val Tuckwell, the publishing husband and wife team will be honoured for their commitment to Scotland and publishing its history and literature under the auspices of Tuckwell Press.

Graduation ceremony for the Faculty of Life Sciences, the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and the Faculty of Law and Accountancy.

The University will confer honorary degrees upon:

Sir Tom McKillop, the Chief Executive of the world's fifth largest pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca.

Vannessa Lawrence, Director General of the Ordnance Survey and a University of Dundee alumna, studied for a postgraduate degree in remote sensing in the 1980s. She is the youngest person ever to direct the Ordnance Survey.
