A community nurse who is changing career to focus on the ills of the environment has received a newly established award for her research into green business policies.

Janice Gray is a BSc Environmental Management student at the University of Dundee who still works during the summer months as a fully qualified community nurse at Monifieth Medical Centre. She received the award from Dundee-based ecos Environmental Control Systems for an essay focussing on how small businesses can keep in line with the environmental policies of the bigger companies they supply.

Janice, who said she wants to take a new direction in her life, has just completed third year on the BSc Environmental Management programme at the University. After she graduates next year she hopes to take up a post with an environmental protection agency such as Scottish Natural Heritage.

Scott Brady, Managing Director of ecos said he was impressed by the calibre and the topic of Janice's essay as it represented real concerns for small-to-medium size enterprises.

'If small enterprises are supplying larger companies, they are under pressure to follow the same environmental policies as the companies they supply. Janice's essay clearly defined the main issues involved and ecos is delighted to link up with the University and encourage students in the increasingly important field of environmental management.'
