Make It In Scotland

Photo opportunity: 10.30am, Tuesday 27 January, Caird Hall, City Square, Dundee.

The University of Dundee's design experts will be on hand at a careers roadshow this week in a bid to encourage more pupils to pursue design-related jobs.

The Make It In Scotland event at the Caird Hall is aimed at introducing S2 school pupils to the range of career opportunities in the manufacturing sector. By promoting science, engineering and technology, it is hoped the day will enable pupils to make more informed career choices. The three-day event is expected to attract 2000 pupils.

Fraser Bruce, Product Development Engineer at the University's School of Design, said, "At last year's roadshow we had fantastic feedback from school pupils from across Tayside. It is essential that we have contact with pupils at this stage before they have finalised their subject choices at school.

There are so many possible career paths in product design and development and we hope this event will give pupils a flavour of what this sector has to offer."

On each of the three days, Fraser will give an introduction to product design and run a workshop for the pupils which will include the task of re-designing a lemon squeezer to make a new, improved version.

The University recently introduced new undergraduate courses in Innovative Product Design and Interactive Media Design in response to the continuing evolution of the products, services and spaces which we all use and occupy. As advances in technology make previously unimaginable products possible, training the designers of tomorrow means equipping them with the skills necessary to meet these rapidly changing demands. The courses draw on the University's expertise in design, applied computing and mechanical engineering, combining them to give students a sound technological understanding, the creative skills of the designer and a clear understanding of the market needs.
