Five candidates for University of Dundee Rector

The Rectorial election is hotting up at the University of Dundee with five candidates in the running to represent the students for the next three years. Dr Abd-al-Fattah El-Awaisi, David Hasselhoff, Nick Johnston MSP, Fred MacAulay, Richard Whitely, have all now been formally nominated to the University.

Abd al-Fattah El-Awaisi is the Islamic studies and Arabic specialist at Stirling University and is to be Principal and vice-Chancellor of the Aal Maktoom Institute of Arabic and Islamic studies when it opens in Glasgow in September this year.

David Hasselhoff first achieved fame in Britain as Michael Knight in TV's Knightrider before becoming a household name in Baywatch.

Nick Johnston MSP is a Conservative member of the Scottish parliament for mid Scotland and Fife and is the party's deputy spokesperson on industry, economy and finance.

Fred McAulay is a graduate of the University of Dundee, a comedian and regular presenter on BBC Scotland.

Richard Whitely is best known as Countdown's presenter for Yorkshire television.

A further nomination, Twinkle Rat, was ruled invalid on the grounds that the nominee had not personally signed the form confirming the acceptance of the nomination. (There was no evidence that paw prints on the form belonged to the candidate and were not obtained under duress.)

Hustings will take place in Dundee University Students Association on Wednesday 7 February at 8pm with the election following on Friday 9 February. Polls will be open all day and student leaders expect an exciting and hard fought election with this year's record number of candidates.
