Healthy award for University catering

Photo opportunity 2pm, Friday 20 February, Gardyne Road campus, Broughty Ferry.

The Catering Team at the University of Dundee's Faculty of Education and Social Work are the first caterers in Tayside and one of only a handful of universities in Scotland to receive the Scottish Healthy Choice Award from the Scottish Consumer Board.

Catering manager Kevin Megaw MBE who will receive the award said: "We provide a good range of vegetable based and low fat dishes ensuring that we use fresh ingredients and plenty of rice, pulses and fruit. We find that healthy and nutritious lunches are very popular with the staff and students here at the Faculty of Education and Social Work. It is important that our trainee teachers experience healthy options so they can pass on these habits to the next generation, improving Scotland's health."

Claire Brown, National Co-ordinator of the Scottish healthy choice awards scheme and the Tayside Co-ordinator for the Scottish healthy choice award, Rosemary Davidson will attend the presentation.

The award will be presented to the team on Friday 20 January at 2pm by Wendy Wrieden a nutritionist from the University of Dundee on behalf of the Scottish Consumer Board.

Wendy said: "It is essential that canteens provide healthy choices for their customers so people can make healthy eating choices at work as well as at home. It is particularly important that educational establishments 'practise what they preach.' Hopefully other establishments will be inspired by the team at the Gardyne Road campus of the University of Dundee, providing nutritious meals and making an important contribution to the health of Scotland."

The Scottish Diet Action Plan in 1996 recommended that the Scottish Consumer Council in partnership with the Health Education Board for Scotland should introduce a national healthy eating award scheme. The Scottish Healthy Choices Award was launched in 1997.
