BBC World Affairs Editor John Simpson said last night that he thought that war had been inevitable since the day George Bush took office in the White House. He was speaking at the University of Dundee where he was awarded an honorary degree.

Simpson delivered a 45 minute address to a capacity audience at the University of Dundee after University Chancellor Sir James Black had awarded him a doctorate for his unique contribution to broadcasting.

John Simpson had spent the day at the University having flown in over the Tay estuary in the morning to Dundee airport. He met staff and students and expressed his delight at his visit. He said: "Dundee is a beautiful place in a beautiful setting. I hope that this is the beginning of a long relationship with the University of Dundee. I very much look forward to keeping up with all the University's endeavours and returning here in the future."
