Boxing championships in Dundee

Photo opportunities: Photographers are welcome to attend on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th December, Bonar Hall, Dundee.

Universities from across the UK will compete this weekend in the British Universities Boxing Championships (BUBC) hosted by the University of Dundee, and in a landmark year for the annual event, females will take part for the very first time.

Over 100 boxers will make their way to Dundee from across the UK for the two-day amateur boxing event organised by the British Universities Sports Association (BUSA). There is much anticipation with ten females boxing including Jade Searle who makes her debut appearance for the University of Dundee.

Also from University of Dundee, Barry Toole will have his first competitive fight in the lightweight category and sports union president, Andrew Renwick will compete in light-welter weight.

Club Captain Lee Hamilton said, "We are all looking forward to this weekend's championships. With females competing it is sure to be a memorable event. This is our opportunity to put our extensive training into practice and hopefully pick up some medals on the way."

Visitors will be hoping for front row seats when middleweight boxer Eamon O'Kane from University of Ulster takes to the ring. Eamon won the British University Championships at Open Class last year and with the Four Nations Boxing Championships title under his belt he is expected to be a star performer.

The championships will take place in the Bonar Hall on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 December. Fights commence at 1.30pm on Saturday and 2.00pm for the finals on Sunday.

The public are welcome. Spectators are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.

Prices: Saturday - £6 or £5 with a student card Sunday - £8 or £7 with a student card.
