Howard for Edinburgh Principal

Professor Ian Howard, Dean of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design at the University of Dundee is to become Principal of Edinburgh College of Art. Professor Howard expects to take up his new post in June or July 2001.

A well known painter and printmaker, Ian Howard was one of the prime movers behind the creation of the Dundee Contemporary Arts centre. He has been Professor of Fine Art at the Faculty of Duncan of Jordanstone College since 1995 and Dean since 1999.

Educated at Aberdeen Grammar School, his first degree was MA in fine art from Edinburgh College of Art. He won the Andrew Grant post-graduate scholarship in painting and graduated with a post-diploma in painting from Edinburgh in 1976. A Helen Rose Travelling Scholarship allowed him to travel and study in Italy for a year. He lectured in the painting department at Grays School of Art, Aberdeen from 1977 until his appointment as head of painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in 1986. An award of a Sir William Gillies Bequest Scholarship in 1990 allowed him to travel to India and Thailand.

In November 1998 he was elected a painting academician of the Royal Scottish Academy with whom he has been associated for some time. His work is shown widely in Europe and America and is held in many public collections including the Contemporary Arts Society, Scottish Arts Council and the Arts Council of Great Britain.

He said today: "My years in Dundee have been some of the most exciting and satisfying of my career so far. So much has been achieved here to put Dundee and Duncan of Jordanstone College very firmly on the international map for contemporary art in both research and teaching. The time has come for me personally to take up a new challenge but I wish this creative city and university all success for the future."/ends
