Dundee's Lord Provost John Letford will take a brave step this weekend. Still recovering from a major heart operation but cleared by his doctor for the challenge, the Lord Provost will undertake the nine mile TICR trek in Pitlochry for the Institute for Cardiovascular Research as he knows it is good for his heart and for funding research in Dundee on heart disease.

A group from the Scottish Parliament will put aside their party differences as they join the Lord Provost to raise money for heart disease research and reduce their own chances of heart disease at the same time.

Shona Robison, MSP for Dundee East, Kate McLean, MSP for Dundee West and John Swinney, MSP for North Tayside will start the nine mile hike around Pitlochry at 11am on Saturday 30 August.

The parliamentary group will be joined by scores of other walkers keen to enjoy the delights of the Perthshire countryside and raise money for the Institute for Cardiovascular Research.

TICR aims to bring together on one site clinicians and researchers with expertise in cardiovascular disease to create a centre of excellence tackling Scotland's number one killer heart disease.

A host of prizes will be on offer for the quickest walkers and those who successfully complete the quiz.

The TICR trek kicks off a busy month of fundraising for TICR with Lorraine Kelly launching the Big City Challenge on 20th September and the charity Samurai ball on Saturday 27th September. Registration forms, tickets and information available from Ali Constable, External Relations 01382 345564.

The Lord Provost is available for interview on 01382 434216.
