Reaction to death of student

Students and staff at the University of Dundee were shocked and saddened today to hear of the death of 21 year old town and regional planning student Adam Stevenson.

Vice Chancellor of the University Sir Alan Langlands said today: "This is a tragic loss of a young life. Our thoughts and sympathies are with Adam's family, as well as his fellow students and the staff who knew and taught him."

Adam, who was from Balmullo in Fife, died in a car accident on Sunday evening on the Cupar-Balmullo road.

A popular and sociable student, Adam was in his final year. His dissertation supervisor Mr David Rice, who knew Adam well, described him as "an extremely appealing student - open, friendly, pleasant and well balanced - and one of the most able students in his year."

In second year Adam was selected on the basis of academic performance for a one term placement in Holland at the University of Nijmegen. His final year dissertation was on the role of landscaping in the regeneration of four key areas in Scotland. He was monitoring the effects of the improvement of soft landscape features such as play areas, trees and shrubs and the inclusion of "defensible space" around houses.

"Adam was a student who maximised both the academic and social opportunities available to him at university. He was likely to be heading for an upper second class honours. His fellow students will be devastated at his loss," said Mr Rice.
