Advances highlighted at latest cancer forum

Advances in the understanding of leukaemias and related cancers will be highlighted at a conference of Dundee-based researchers and doctors on 12 June - the latest in a series of cancer forums organised at the University of Dundee’s West Park Centre.

Over 100 clinicians and scientists from Dundee with an interest in cancer research will gather to discuss local research initiatives into the causes and treatments of blood and lymphatic cancers known as leukaemias and lymphomas.

Organised by the University of Dundee’s Dr David Bowen, Clinical Senior Lecturer and Consultant in Haematology, the Haematological Malignancies forum will demonstrate the remarkable advances in the understanding of how leukaemias and lymphomas affect the body. Says Dr Bowen : ‘These advances have in turn led to strategies designed to improve treatment for selected groups of patients and to avoid overtreatment for those with a particularly good prognosis.’

New treatment studies of a relatively common early form of leukaemia called Myelodysplasia (MDS) have earned Dundee a reputation as an official Centre of Excellence in this field from the MDS Foundation in New Jersey, USA. Dr Bowen’s scientific research group is studying the potential causes of MDS with Professor Roland Wolf Director of the University’s Biomedical Research Centre and the response of the immune system to MDS with Dr Richard Kay in Ninewells

The department also supports the UK-based Medical Research Council’s Clinical Trials in Leukaemias and Dr Andrew Heppleston is an active participant in the Scotland and Newcastle Lymphoma Group studies and organisation. Contact Dr David Bowen 01382 632570
