Members of ICE (the Institution of Civil Engineers) in Dundee showed their true warmth at their recent annual ball when they raised £200 through a raffle to help the University of Dundee's Rwandan Scholarship Fund. On Friday (18 Dec) ICE Chairman Dr Fraser Smith hands over a cheque to Professor Janet Sprent, patron of the fund which was established this year to help Rwandan women contibute to the rebuilding of their country through providing them with scholarships to develop their skills. Also present at the handover ceremony will be civil engineering student Speciosa Nakavuma - the first Rwandan scholarship student to benefit from the fund.
Speciosa, who lost many relatives in the Rwandan genocide in the mid 1990s, came to the University of Dundee in October to develop her knowledge of civil engineering - a subject not traditionally studied by women in her country. On her return to Rwanda, Speciosa's main objective is to develop a project, Pioneer Women Construction Enterprise, to help other women along this route.
Thanking ICE for their contribution to the fund, Professor Sprent said: "It is heartwarming to see Dundee's civil engineers put their support behind this worthwhile cause."
