Record number of award winners in degree show

The next generation of graduates from Scotland’s best rated art school, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design display their final year’s work in the 1998 annual degree show which this year includes more award winners than ever.

Art buyers looking to take a chance on tomorrow’s big names will find a wealth of choice. Over 200 students in subjects from animation to architecture will exhibit works to shock, inspire, delight and challenge their audience at the public exhibition which runs from 13 - 20 June.

The Matthew and Crawford buildings on Perth Road are set to become a warren of surprises with the students using every corner to show around a thousand exhibits including textiles, animations, ceramics, jewellery, painting and electronic imagery. Most exhibits will be for sale.

Describing an early tour of this year’s show as ‘absolutely terrific’, Dean of the Faculty Bill Barr said : ‘This year’s exhibition promises to be better than ever. Our students have won a record number of national awards and we also have more students exhibiting across all the disciplines.’

Note for editors Latest award winners include: Ben Smith, in his third year of graphic design, who, last week, won the Scottish Young Designer of the Year award sponsored by the Drum Magazine.

Major RSA awards were made to - Jim Richardson, graphics; Gaynor Stogdale, printed textiles; Ewan Ferrier, interior design.

Bradford Textile Society Design Competition - 1st Abigail Dyer, printed textiles; 2nd Nicola Henderson, printed textiles; commendations - Gillian Nelson and Deborah Burrell both printed textiles.

Printmaking students had the following successes Jane Sharkey - Carnegie Trust Vacation Scholarship (£570) Helen Waddington - Royal Scottish Academy Printmaking Award (£400) Stephen Moriarty - John Kinross Scholarship for 3 months in Florence Graeme McDougal - place on MFA programme at Southern Illinois University Alexe Dilworth - Royal College of Art, postgraduate printmaking
