Exhibition of 'selfies' goes on display at DJCAD

It's been a big few months for the selfie, with Oxford Dictionaries naming it their word of the year and the snap of the Oscars stars smashing records for re-tweets but a new exhibition of work from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) students takes a more painstaking approach to self-portraiture.

Every year, students on the General Foundation programme at DJCAD are tasked with creating portraits of themselves as part of their coursework, and the work produced by the current crop is being displayed at the Cantina on Level 3 of the Crawford Building until 28th March.

The exhibits include everything from traditional painted portraits to 3D models, with one puppet even finding its way into the display.

The General Foundation programme is undertaken by first-year undergraduates to enable them to develop the fundamental skills required for entry to any of the nine specialist art and design courses on offer at DJCAD, part of the University of Dundee.

Course Director Rod Chisholm said 'For many of our students, this is the first time their work will have been exhibited publicly and the fact their exhibit is a representation of themselves makes it doubly challenging and will act as a visual reminder of the age, stage and creative development they were at in years to come.'

General Foundation Self-Portraits is open at the DJCAD Cantina, Crawford Building, from 8.30am-4pm each weekday until Friday, 28th March. Entry is free and open to all.
