'War Horse' screening to aid learning of pupils and students

Photo opportunity: 5pm on Tuesday, 4th March at Dalhousie Building, Old Hawkhill.

Pupils from two Fife primary schools will next week visit the University of Dundee for an engagement event hosted by the Education, English and History programmes.

The pupils from Torbain Primary School in Kirkcaldy and Balmullo Primary will travel to Dundee for the event on Tuesday, 4th March. The visit was initiated by Education staff exploring how films can enhance children's learning. The children will watch the adaptation of the Michael Morpurgo novel 'War Horse' before they take part in a workshop with staff and students discuss key themes from the movie as well as their school work and ideas.

Dr Derek Patrick and Dr Billy Kenefick, who are leading the Great War Dundee project and are members of the History programme, will teach the children about the conflict the film is set in, while Dr Brian Hoyle, from English, will introduce the film and talk about the original book.

Richard Holme, a Lecturer in Education at the University, said, 'We will be delighted to welcome the pupils to the University. This is a great chance to build a relationship with these children that will hopefully continue for many years as well as showing our students how film can be used to teach children.

"Pupils from Torbain have presented very successfully to students and staff at the University several times. This will also be a great chance for academics and students alike to learn from the next generation of historians, authors, film reviewers and researchers.

'My colleagues from History and English have very kindly agreed to talk about the conflict and the book so that the pupils can learn about the film's context and I'm sure the event will be rewarding for all involved.'

The screening takes places at the Dalhousie Building, Old Hawkhill, at 5pm on Tuesday, 4th March.
