Dundee students get state-of-the-art study space

Students arriving at the University of Dundee next week will have access to one of the best study spaces in the country following a major refurbishment of the Main Library at the heart of the City campus.

The ground floor of the Library has been transformed over the summer as part of a £ 1.3million three-phase redevelopment project. The refurbishment has been funded from University capital funds, with a significant contribution from the Wolfson Foundation.

The new, bright and vibrant study environment caters for a variety of different learning styles with new bookable group work spaces and media booths on an international theme, and increased capacity with more desks, PCs and power, largely in response to student feedback and demand.

"This investment provides a state-of-the-art facility and will considerably enhance the overall student experience, which our students have already voted the best in Scotland," said Dr Richard Parsons, Director of the Library and Learning Centre.

"Libraries are changing constantly as we adopt new technology and cater to the demands of the modern student. We have increased our capacity by around 30 per cent to provide 1500 study spaces, and are providing enhanced wireless capacity and technical support. Every study place is now equipped with a power socket, which is a first in Scotland.

"We have also created a new variable study zone of 185 places that can be utilised in Silent, Quiet, or Group study modes depending on demand at different times of the academic year. We think this is an innovative and unique characteristic."

The new facilities will be officially opened on Monday 2nd September at 2pm in the Main Library atrium on the ground floor.
