Charity sports day to take University athletes out of comfort zone

Photo opportunity: 2.30pm on Wednesday, 18th September at Riverside Sports Ground.

Dundee University Sports Union will this week hold a charity sports day when staff and students come together to raise money for good causes and promote sport at the University.

Around 200 participants are expected for the fun event, which will see the athletes test their mettle in challenges such as tug o' war, sack race, and potato-and-spoon race as well as a 4x100m relay. The event takes place at the University's Riverside Sports Ground from 2.30pm on Wednesday, 18th September.

Each participant will pay £3 to take part, while a bucket collection and raffle will help boost the coffers. All money raised will be split between Scottish Disability Sports and the bus fund to allow University teams to travel to matches and competitions.

The Sports Union will also take the opportunity to encourage more people to get involved in its many clubs as well as promoting the 'Healthy Body, Healthy Mind' initiative that seeks to raise awareness of the links between exercise and good mental health.

Vice-President of the Sports Union Jennifer Wood said the event would see some of the country's best student athletes step into unfamiliar territory.

"We've got rugby players, sprinters, footballers, hockey players, cyclists and boxers, but can they run whilst balancing a potato on a spoon?' she asked. 'How will the cricket players fare at tug o' war, and what about the swimmers taking part in the sack race?

'The whole point of the day is to have fun, raise money for charity and promote sport here. The sports day is a great opportunity to bring the entire University community together to have a laugh and build a supportive relationship amongst athletes from different clubs and teams. A lot of the competitors will be taking part in fancy dress, while anyone is welcome to come along and just enjoy the atmosphere.'
