Sustainable community development in focus at symposium

The future of sustainable development will be explored at a symposium taking place at the University of Dundee this week.

The University's Geddes Institute for Urban Research will host the event, which takes place at the Dalhousie Building on Friday, 1st November. "Creating Sustainable Communities: Better Approaches to Master-Planning Practice" is being held in conjunction with a number of organisations, including Architecture Design Scotland, the Academy of Urbanism, and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. It will bring together architects, designers and planners from across the country.

Presentations and workshops exploring a number of key issues related to the planning of sustainable communities will take place, including tensions between public and private interests and how planners can harness community ambition and vision.

The symposium will provide a platform to share recent research on sustainable development that provides clear evidence of how the master planning process can promote positive economic and social growth, helping to create balanced and sustainable places that support homes, jobs, and a high quality of life and well-being. It will also highlight the role that different professions have to play in bringing this about.

Professor Rob Duck, Dean of the School of the Environment at the University, said, "Austerity and ambitions for recovery challenge how we develop sustainable places. The active collaboration between state, market and community stakeholders is required for sustainable development to take root.

"As a University our focus is to carry out robust evaluation of current practice of spatial design and planning and to stimulate the critical assessment of new ideas and methods. Through these activities we can provide a research and learning framework promoting better place-making."

A limited number of places at the event are available. More information is available by contacting organiser Dr Husam Alwaer on h.alwaer@dundee.ac.uk
