Ian Lowe Centre, Ninewells Hospital

High achieving students from across all years of the undergraduate medical programme at the University of Dundee will be honoured today.

The Medical School Prizegiving will see students from first to final years recognised for their achievements.

The prizes include the John Carvell Prize, awarded every year for an undergraduate essay writing competition. John Carvell is a notable alumnus of the University and will be on hand to present the prize.

He was the first President of the Sports Union at the University and has gone on to a notable career in medicine. From 1983 to 2001 he was Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Salisbury District Hospital (now Consultant Emeritus). He is currently Chairman of the Salisbury Independent Hospitals Trust, and Public Governor of Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust. He was awarded the Fellowship of the British Medical Association in 2009 in recognition of his services to medicine and to the Salisbury Division of the BMA.

He chaired the National Spinal Taskforce for England until last year.

The Prizegiving will commence in the Ian Lowe Centre at Ninewells from 5.30pm.
