University welcomes 'Go Dundee Learning Journey'

The Go Dundee Learning Journey 2013 will stop off at the University of Dundee tomorrow, Saturday May 18th, where passengers will get an insight into the internationally renowned science activities taking place in the city.

The Go Dundee bus will visit the Medical School, the College of Life Sciences and the Space Technology Centre at the University.

At the Medical School at Ninewells, Gordon Clark and Susan Somerville of the Clinical Skills Centre will be demonstrating some of the training activities which regularly take place in this state-of-the-art facility.

Teaching student doctors, nurses, dentists and allied health professionals involves training groups in procedural and communication skills, history taking, examination, routine and emergency clinical scenarios.

The Clinical Skills Centre uses a selection of bespoke mannequins and task training devices (such as arms or body parts ) for rehearsal of these skills and activities.

The Centre also works a Simulated Patient Bank of volunteers - members of the public - who regularly help with teaching and examination of students. Some of our Simulated Patients will be present on Saturday.

Medical students are also involved in teaching in the local community - in primary and secondary schools, guiding/scouting organisations and the community based Heartstart Discovery emergency life support courses. Students will be demonstrating some healthcare skills at Saturday's event.

At the College of Life Sciences, visitors will hear a talk from Professor Mike Ferguson, Dean of Research, about the work that takes place in the College and Dundee's growing international reputation in the life sciences. The talk will be followed by a tour of the Drug Discovery Unit.

At the Space Technology Centre the passengers will hear how Dundee is making a major contribution to the space industry around the world.

Go Dundee is an informal group which aims to increase the confidence in the City of Dundee as a great place to live and work. The theme for 2013 is "Science and the City; the science of life, death and other everyday events".
