Design in action launches across Scotland

Wayne Hemingway, one of the UK's most recognisable designers, will give a public lecture in Dundee this week to cap a week of activities across Scotland to mark the official launch of the Design in Action project.

Design in Action is a Knowledge Exchange Hub backed by £4million in funding by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and has been established to encourage and research design-led business innovation. The project, led by the University of Dundee, is already working with dozens of businesses and organisations across Scotland.

The project's public launch this week includes events in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen before the public lecture and party in Dundee on Thursday.

"Design is not just about a beautiful product, it is something that can effect change in wider society," said Professor Georgina Follett, Deputy Principal of the University of Dundee, who is heading the project.

"We are working with businesses in areas not traditionally associated with design such as sport, wellbeing, rural economics, and food and diet. What we are working on with all of these organisations is the idea that design can inform so much of what makes any business or institution successful. It is a crucial part of business planning and development.

"I am delighted that Wayne Hemingway is joining us this week to help promote the message that design is something which impacts on all of us throughout our everyday lives."

Wayne Hemingway is co-founder of Red or Dead and Hemingway Design. In his lecture in Dundee he will talk about his illustrious career as an award-winning fashion designer and, more recently, as an award-winning social and housing designer whose enviable client list ranges from Coca-Cola, Sainsbury's and Sky TV to Sony and McDonald's.

Wayne received an MBE in the Queen's Birthday List in 2006, is a Professor in the Built Environment department at Northumbria University, a Doctor of Design at Wolverhampton, Lancaster and Stafford Universities and a Fellow of Blackburn College.

The lecture takes place in the Dalhouse Building at the University of Dundee at 6pm on Thursday, May 16th. Tickets are free and can be booked via http://dialaunch-dundee.eventbrite.com

Events will take place earlier in the week in Glasgow (Monday 13th), Edinburgh (Tuesday 14th) and Aberdeen (Wednesday15th), details are:

Each of the events will give attendees the opportunity to hear more about this exciting project whilst networking with representatives from industry, design and academia.

Design in Action is a Knowledge Exchange Hub funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
