Dentists gather for 50th anniversary reunion

Photo opportunity: 2.15pm on Thursday, 2nd May at the Campbell Room, 1st Floor, Dundee Dental School, Park Place.

Dentists who trained in Dundee in the late 1950s and early 1960s will tomorrow travel from across the UK to take part in a reunion celebrating the 50th anniversary of their graduation.

The class of 1963 at what was then University College Dundee have remained close friends over the years and have regularly made the effort to stage reunions. In total, 16 members of the class and their spouses will visit the University of Dundee to see how things have changed in the five decades since they left the institution.

They will be welcomed by Professor Mark Hector, Dean of Dentistry, before being given a tour of the Dental School and the wider University campus

The reunion is being organised by Dr Liz Hardie, who says everyone is looking forward to meeting up with their old friends once again.

"When we were studying at Dundee we established what we called the K9 Club, the purpose of which was to strengthen ties for social functions and eventually reunions," she said.

"When we were students we used to organise jumble sales and all sorts of other things to raise money. We were great friends and we've kept this spirit going since graduating all those years ago. We were always a close-knit group and have held many reunions in the past so we're delighted to be keeping this up to mark our 50th anniversary.

"What's even more remarkable is that we keep in touch despite the class being scattered across the UK. There are only two of us who still live locally, while others are based in other parts of Scotland or England, which is why previous reunions have tended to be held elsewhere.

"It's wonderful that so many people are travelling from across the UK to be here with their partners, many of whom they met either here or in St Andrews, as the University College was still part of St Andrews University in those days."

After their tour of the campus, the party will head to Apex Hotel, City Quay, where a reception will be held to celebrate the anniversary.
