Strathmore Trophy 2013 challenges 'digital natives'

Photo opportunity: 2.20pm on Monday, 24th June at Dalhousie Building, Old Hawkhill. Prize presentation and demonstration of winning designs.

'Digital natives' from 17 schools across eastern Scotland will tomorrow consider the implications of being immersed in a high-tech world since birth during the University of Dundee's annual Strathmore Trophy challenge.

The event, which takes place at the Queen Mother Building on Monday 24th of June from 10am, will see teams of four from the S1 and S2 age group compete against each other in a challenge set by staff at the University's School of Computing.

This year's event is inspired by the fact that these school pupils are digital natives, who have never known anything other than a world dominated by the Internet and ever-smarter devices. Hundreds of youngsters from Tayside, Fife, Aberdeenshire and Stirlingshire will be asked to consider how this affects their outlook on the world and identify the things that really matter to them.

Organiser Karen Petrie from the School of Computing said, "Through the Strathmore Trophy, we hope to open the eyes of school pupils and give them the taste of what it really means to live in the digital age.

"We also want the pupils to see that computing research is not all about programming. Dr Wendy Moncur, a lecturer in the School of Computing, proposed this challenge based on her research interests in the design of technology for demanding contexts in social and health settings."

The Strathmore Trophy competition, now in its 16th year, is held annually by the School of Computing to get local school pupils thinking about applications of computer technology to help people.

The trophy and other prizes will be presented at the University's Dalhousie Building at 2.20pm.
