'Six Designers in Search of Authenticity' - public lecture on 19th June

The notion of authenticity in design, from the ex-military parka to vintage sports cars, Warhol's Brillo box to Obama's election material, will be examined at the University of Dundee next week.

Deyan Sudjic, Director of the Design Museum in London, will talk about 'Six Designers in Search of Authenticity' at the Dalhousie Building on Wednesday, 19th June. He will receive an Honorary Degree from the University earlier that day.

"Designers, artists and architects all strive for the elusive quality of authenticity but what does authenticity mean in the digital age?" asked Deyan. "This is a time, after all, when technology has turned design into the most knowing of professions, one that is dedicated to faking the signs of authenticity as faithfully as possible.

Prior to taking up his post at the Design Museum in 2006, Deyan Sudjic was Dean of the Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design at Kingston University, visiting Professor at the Royal College of Art, and the Observer's design and architecture writer.

He was director of Glasgow 1999, UK City of Architecture, and in 2002 was Director of the Venice Architecture Biennale. Deyan was for several years visiting Professor at the Academy of Applied Art in Vienna, running a course in design history and theory.

From 2000 to 2004 he was Editor of Domus, the international magazine of art, architecture and design, and was Founding Editor of Blueprint magazine. He has published many books on design and architecture, and is one of our foremost voices and commentators on design.

In 2004, he was awarded the Bicentenary Medal of the Royal Society of Arts for the promotion of design, and was made an honorary fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects. Deyan was made an OBE in 2000.

'Six Designers in Search of Authenticity', a public lecture by Deyan Sudjic takes place at 6pm on Wednesday 19th June in the Dalhousie Building, old Hawkhill. This lecture is hosted by the University in collaboration with Design in Action, an AHRC-funded Knowledge Exchange Hub for the Creative Economy located within Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design.
