University to honour fellows

Prominent business figures and philanthropists are among those who will be recognised by the University of Dundee as its first Honorary Fellows at Graduation ceremonies this week.

The Fellowships have been established to recognise individuals from outside the institution who have developed a strong relationship with the University and contributed to its success.

They will continue to act as advocates and ambassadors for the University and help further strengthen links between the institution and the local community, business and industry, the public sector and civic Dundee.

"Our Honorary Fellows are all people who have made a significant contribution to Dundee's success and given freely their time, experience and expertise," said Professor Pete Downes, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University. "The University is more than an educational institution, it is part of the fabric of business and civic life in Scotland.

"We have very good links with the business and civic community and each of the people we are honouring this week has played a major role in building these relationships, helping foster a sense of enterprise across the University, engaging with our students, and supporting our fundraising and other activities. I am delighted to see them celebrated this week as our first group of Honorary Fellows."

The Honorary Fellows are:

Scott Brady is the University's first entrepreneur-in-residence. He is a successful businessman who has built up and sold three companies across different sectors. He works with the University's Enterprise Gym, encouraging students and graduates to develop and commercialise their talents and ideas.

Malcolm Horner is Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering at the University and a former Vice-Principal. During his career he spent 15 years in industry and set up his own company, Whole Life Consultancy Ltd. Professor Horner has a wide range of links with the engineering industry and was previously Chairman of Scottish Enterprise Tayside.

Lesley Knox is Chair of Design Dundee Ltd, the charitable company which has been formed to take forward the V&A at Dundee project. She is a former Chair of Alliance Trust and holds a number of other high level positions in business.

Gary McEwen is Chief Executive of Enterprise North East Trust. He is a keen promoter of Enterprise particularly in areas of social deprivation and with young people who have less than straightforward lives. He was awarded 'The Queen's Award for Enterprise Promotion' in 2005. He is a member of the Prince's Scottish Youth Business Trust Growth Fund panel, and a keen supporter of the University's Enterprise Gym.

John Milligan was Chair of the University's Court, the institution's governing body, from 2004 to 2010. He began his wide-ranging career as a miner at the age of sixteen. He subsequently went on to study as a mature student at Strathclyde University qualifying as a mechanical engineer, rising to become Chairman and Chief Executive of 'Atlantic Power and Gas'. He now runs the Ballathie estate near Perth.

Bruce Linton built up James Keillor Estates Ltd into a significant property development and management company from a strong Dundee base. Bruce and his management team are enthusiastic supporters of the University's enterprise development agenda.

John Beaton MBE built up Scotland's leading independent supplier of plant equipment to the oil industry, Kolfor Plant Ltd. Since the sale of Kolfor, John has remained active as a business angel and non-executive director. He is a charity fundraiser and a supporter of the University's enterprise agenda.

Alan Honig has an extensive background in management, particularly in construction, engineering and the oil industry, including experience working in the United States and across Europe. He is a long standing participant in the University's Enterprise Gym activities.

Baron & Baroness Leckie live in Angus and are widely involved in activities of an altruistic and philanthropic nature. They have been particularly closely involved with the work of the University's Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification and the 'Million For A Morgue' campaign.
