European countries come together to promote Sustainable Construction

Whole Life Consultants Ltd, a spin out company from the University of Dundee, has joined with five European partners to deliver an EU-funded programme to transfer knowledge in sustainable construction.

The aim of the programme is to provide training in managing sustainability of the built environment to allow participants to achieve a more sustainable construction industry. The programme is innovative as its focus is on whole life sustainability and not purely design or construction.

The partners are PPP Centar from Croatia, Frederick University from Cyprus, FORSAS from Italy, Romanian Society for Lifelong Learning from Romania, and DOCTUM from Spain. Together they form the Leonardo Da Vinci Transfer of Innovation Project, under the Lifelong Learning Programme.

Sustainable construction takes account of all three dimensions of sustainability: the environmental, the social and the economic. This project is unique in its approach to whole life sustainability - examining projects from inception to demolition.

The construction industry has one of the largest impacts on sustainability; environmentally, socially and economically. Although many construction professionals are aware of the technical issues of sustainability, they are unaware of the importance of managing sustainability through the project life cycle.

The programme will offer:

  • a) a 'train the trainer' service to ensure sustainability of projects in the built environment, and
  • b) to train the members of a construction team including clients, designers, contractors, operators and other professionals to undertake the effective management of their projects to meet the challenges of a sustainable built environment.

The train the trainer sessions will initially be run during March and April with trainee sessions available from April in each of the five countries.

Professor Malcolm Horner, Chairman of Whole Life Consultants Ltd and Emeritus Professor of Engineering Management at the University of Dundee, said, "This award is a first class example of European, trans-national knowledge sharing. It demonstrates how, with support from the European Union, the results of successful research projects (in this case funded by the EPSRC - www.sue-mot.org) can have a real impact on professional practice."
