'The Lament Room' - 12th December

A special, one-off adaptation of an award-winning novel by Kirsty Gunn, Professor of Writing Practice and Study at the University of Dundee, will take place at The Little Theatre on Thursday, 12th December.

'The Lament Room' is a unique production of voice, music, art and theatre that invites the audience into the box room of the remote Grey House, a family home and centre for bagpipe music high in the hills of northern Scotland, where John Sutherland is dying. As his final lament fades, the stories and secrets of the people who live here unfold.

Professor Gunn has adapted The Lament Room for stage from her internationally acclaimed novel, The Big Music, and students from the MLitt Writing Study and Practice programme will perform the piece.

She said, 'I always saw The Big Music as not so much a novel but more a space into which you could enter - like a room in an art gallery or a theatre. This event at The Little Theatre brings that dream to life.'

Professor Gunn's sister Merran, an artist and music producer, has designed the stage set for the production as well as an accompanying exhibition of artefacts from the Grey House which will go on display at the University from next week.

Gary Gowans, a filmmaker at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, and Dr Gail Low, General Editor of Dundee University Review of the Arts (DURA), have also contributed heavily to the production.

The Lament Room will be performed at The Little Theatre, Victoria Road, Dundee, at 4.30pm on Thursday, 12th December.

Tickets cost £3, and can be bought online at http://uod.ac.uk/lament-tickets or in person from Literary Dundee, 6th Floor, Tower Building, University of Dundee. This price includes a small souvenir and refreshments.

A free exhibition of related artefacts from The Lament Room will be displayed in the foyer of the Tower Building, University of Dundee, 10th-16th December.
