New Art & Humanities Masters degree launched

The first cohort of students has taken its place on an exciting new Masters programme offered jointly by the University of Dundee's School of Humanities and Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD).

The MFA Art & Humanities is a collaborative programme taught by staff from DJCAD and the School of Humanities. Uniquely for a Masters degree, the course allows students to tailor it precisely to their own interests by selecting modules from Humanities and Art. Options include English, Film Studies, Philosophy, Gender Culture and Society, Theatre Studies, History, and Comics Studies, paired with work in Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Artist Books, Photography, Sculpture, Installation, Performance Art, Sound Art, or Time Based Art & Digital Film.

Depending on the student's interest, the final output can either be an exhibition, performance, screening or a written dissertation. The purpose of the course is to introduce postgraduate students to new ways of working that augments their creativity.

Artistic practices built on a foundation of learning and critical thinking are a key feature of this course. Students will read, write and work creatively, combining academic studies in the traditional humanities with contemporary art. Two research methods, two ways of working, are synthesised by each student in distinctive skills building, research and discovery.

Course Leader Mary Modeen, from DJCAD, explained, "Artists have never been shy of addressing the important issues in life. They think through practice in paint, wood, performance, installation, photography, video or other means. This course combines hands-on making with visual thinking and academic study in a related area of the Humanities.

"Interdisciplinary research projects shared between staff in art and design and humanities are examples of research-led teaching at its most effective, offering students outstanding potential to learn from leading researchers."

DJCAD is ranked top in Scotland for research in Art & Design, while research in the School of Humanities is also in the 'internationally leading' and 'excellent' categories.

Individual attention, one-to-one tutorials, and supportive small group seminars will provide an encouraging and stimulating environment for personal achievement, while international networks of artists, scholars and professionals brings a global perspective to learning in Scotland in world-class university education.
