Students spark off sponsorship race

A team of motoring enthusiasts from the University of Dundee is offering companies the chance to have a racing team which competes in a major international tournament named after them.

DRIVE, the University's racing team, is looking for sponsors to help build a new car for the coming season of Formula Student, a testing ground for the next generation of world-class engineers.

The DRIVE team, which currently has 25 members, has already built four cars and is hoping not only to race in the UK Formula Student event at Silverstone, but also in the Austrian and German Formula Student events with their newest car.

To enable them to do so, they are seeking businesses and individuals to help them take on the world's best student teams. To do this they have put together a variety of sponsorship packages that can be tailored to suit individual sponsors.

These range from a basic package with a person's name on the side of the car right through to having the car painted in a company's corporate colours and named after them.

Team leader Tony Whinnery said DRIVE had been very fortunate with the support they had enjoyed from local companies in recent years and hoped to build on this in the future.

"The team has several goals for this year," he explained. "We are aiming to finish Silverstone 2013 in the top 20 overall and finish best in Scotland as we did in 2011. We also want to go and compete in Austrian and German Formula Student events after Silverstone and take part in a number of other events across the UK.

"Our sponsors have been amazing over the years, and we've put together an exciting range of packages to attract more funding, from small to large sponsors. We'd love to hear from anyone who thinks they can help in any way."

Formula Student teams must design, build, market and race a single-seat, racing car. The series of international competitions focuses on developing engineering talent in a practical, competitive high-octane environment. Although the Dundee team is predominantly made up of students from engineering courses, members are drawn from across the range of disciplines.

The challenge is for students to assume that a manufacturing firm has engaged them to produce a prototype car for evaluation. In addition to technical skills, students acquire management, marketing and people skills.

Taking part in Formula Student gives them the chance to enhance technical, engineering design, and manufacturing skills as well as learning important lessons about team working, time management, project management, budgeting and presentation.

More information about the team can be found at www.DRIVE.dundee.ac.uk, or by telephoning University of Dundee Motorsport on 01382 38 51 60.
