Literary Festival events it would be criminal to miss

The star of Gregory’s Girl, 1950s mysteries, a tour of Victorian crime spots and a Killer Cookbook are the highlights for crime fiction fans to look forward to at the upcoming Dundee Literary Festival.

The popular genre is well represented at this year’s festival with Sara Sheridan and Maureen Reynolds kicking off the crime events with a look at their books. The latter has written a series of gentle detective novels set in 1950s Dundee, while Sara Sheridan will be introducing the audience to the first in a series of mysteries set in Brighton in the middle of the last century.

The event takes place at 4pm on Friday, 26th October. Tickets cost £3/£2 for concessions, which includes tea and scones provided by Jessie’s Kitchen.

Scottish crime writers Caro Ramsay and Frank Muir will team up to launch The Killer Cookbook, which contains recipes provided by the likes of Jeffery Deaver, Val McDermid and Ian Rankin, later the same day. Caro and Frank will be joined by fellow crime writers to explore the role food plays in their work at 8pm.

Admission is free, but ticketed, and all proceeds from the sale of the book will go to the University of Dundee’s Million for a Morgue campaign www.millionforamorgue.com

Award-winning actor John Gordon Sinclair will celebrate the release of his first novel, Seventy Times Seven, at 6pm on Saturday, 27th October. The gripping story of redemption sees the protagonist undergo a journey to discover his brother’s murderer. Tickets cost £5/£3.

Local author Malcolm Archibald’s new book, A Sink of Atrocity, reveals both the ordinary and extraordinary crimes that took place in 19th century Dundee, and he will be leading a walking tour of the city to discover the site of these crimes.

The tour, which takes in the places where grave robbers struck, where petty pilfering was rife, the court where a man suspected of being Jack the Ripper was tried, and the site of notorious brothels and lodging houses, begins at 12noon with tickets costing £3/£2.

"We’re really excited to be welcoming John Gordon Sinclair to Dundee and are excited to be hearing him read from his book and talk about the inspiration for it," said Anna Day, Director of the Dundee Literary Festival.

"Malcolm Archibald’s tour promises to be a journey of gruesome discovery for Dundonians and visitors alike, and we’re looking forward to seeing what’s on the menu in The Killer Cookbook and taking a journey back in time with Sara Sheridan and Maureen Reynolds."
