Prestigious speakers for Associates Day - DJCAD Degree Show 2012

Photo opportunity: 4pm at the Dean's Office, 4th Floor, Matthew Building, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design on Thursday, 17th May. Star guests Martin Boyce, Richard Banks, Philip Long, Gerald Scarfe, and Helen Storey will be available.

Leading international figures from the worlds of art and design will visit Dundee next week to mark the beginning of the 2012 DJCAD Degree Show season.

Turner Prize-winning artist Martin Boyce, legendary satirical cartoonist Gerald Scarfe, fashion designer and artist Helen Storey, Richard Banks (Principal Interaction Designer for Microsoft Research), and Philip Long (Director of the V&A at Dundee), will deliver a series of insightful lectures to students and visitors on Thursday, 17th May.

This will be followed by an Associates Reception for invited guests that evening when employers, gallery owners, funding organisations and other industry figures tour Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design and meet with some of the UK's top young artists and designers

A Preview for students, and their families and guests will take place the following evening, before the exhibition opens to the public from Saturday 19th to Sunday 27th May.

Professor Tom Inns, Dean of DJCAD, said he was delighted that such a prestigious line-up of speakers would be kicking off the Degree Show celebrations.

"Hearing from the likes of Martin Boyce, Gerald Scarfe, Richard Banks and Helen Storey will be inspirational to our students, who will be using the Degree Show as a springboard to success in their chosen field," he said.

"These are people who have used their natural ability to critical and commercial acclaim, and we will be delighted to welcome speakers of their calibre to Dundee. At the same time, Philip Long will be talking about the V&A at Dundee, the transformative effect it will have on the city, and how it will enrich the cultural pedigree of the whole country."

Martin Boyce's sculptural works recall and reference the materials, textures and forms of the built urban environment. He represented Scotland at the Venice Biennale 2009 with the exhibition 'No Reflections' and was the winner of the 2011 Turner Prize.

As principle interaction designer for Microsoft Research, Richard Banks holds in excess of twenty patents for design work at the company. He recently published 'The Future of Looking Back', a book examining issues of digital legacy and will explore this, and other issues such as personal reminiscing and technology longevity during his talk.

Gerald Scarfe made his name as a satirical cartoonist while working for Punch and Private Eye during the early-1960s. He has exhibited his work across the globe and famously designed and directed the animation for Pink Floyd's The Wall, and Disney's Hercules. He has been political cartoonist for the Sunday Times for 46 years.

Professor Helen Storey is an artist and designer living and working in London. She worked for some of the biggest names in fashion before launching her own label in 1983.

Since the mid-90s, she has been drawn towards the world of scientific research. Alongside her sister Kate, a developmental biologist at the University of Dundee, she created 'Primitive Streak', a double award-winning project, which has been seen by 5 million people in seven countries worldwide.

Philip Long will talk about the development of V&A at Dundee and the ambition to collaborate with cultural organisations across the country in the creation of a new international centre of design for Scotland.

The times for lectures taking place at the University's Dalhousie Building as part of the Associates Day on Thursday 17th May are:

  • 11am - Martin Boyce.
