Dundee to once again host prestigious student sports event

Photo opportunity: 6pm on Wednesday, 21st March at the Institute of Sports and Exercise, University of Dundee. Medals and trophies will be presented to leading student athletes from across Scotland.

The University of Dundee will tomorrow host Scotland's biggest student sports competition, the third year in a row that the prestigious event has been held in Dundee.

Over 300 student competitors in 26 teams from 12 institutions will descend on the campus to compete in the British Universities and Colleges (BUCS) Conference Cup Finals.

Fourteen finals will be held across 7 sports over the course of the day. The success of the 2010 and 2011 BUCS Conference Cup Finals meant the University was once again chosen to host the championships, which represent the high point of the inter-university sporting calendar in Scotland.

Paul McPate, Assistant Director of the Institute of Sport & Exercise said he was delighted to be welcoming leading student athletes from across the country to the University.

"Sport is a major part of the student experience at Dundee, and so it is a great honour to be chosen to hold this event for a third year," he said.

"Top student sportsmen and women from a number of different sports will be competing to prove they are the best in Scotland, and we are very much hoping that we will be celebrating some local success after some fierce, but fair, contests."

There is plenty of local interest in the event, with four Dundee University teams having successfully negotiated their way to their respective finals.

The women's tennis team will meet their St Andrews counterparts on the courts, located at the city centre campus, at 12noon, while the women's hockey side play Glasgow at Riverside Sports Grounds an hour later.

The ISE building will be the venue for the mixed badminton final against Heriot Watt at 2pm, and also for the men's basketball final between Dundee - unbeaten in 24 matches this year - and Glasgow Caledonian at 4pm.

he presentation of the medals and trophies will take place at ISE at 6pm, following the conclusion of that match.
