Stuart MacBride: Million For A Morgue - Saturday Evening Lecture on 4th February

Stuart MacBride, one of the UK's most successful crime authors and one of the 10 writers backing the University of Dundee's 'Million For A Morgue' campaign, will deliver the next instalment in the 2012 Saturday Evening Lecture Series.

Stuart's dark, gritty bestsellers have won him legions of fans, and he will read from his new book, 'Birthdays For The Dead' at the event, which takes place at the University's Dalhousie Building on Saturday, 4th February.

He will then reveal how he came to be a writer, the inspiration behind the dark, twisted ideas in his books, and why he had no hesitation in signing up to support the campaign, in conversation with Professor Sue Black, who is heading up the Million For A Morgue initiative

Professor Black is Director of the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification (CAHID) at the University. The campaign aims to raise £1million to help build a new morgue, which will allow Professor Black and her colleagues to adopt the revolutionary Thiel method of embalming.

Ten leading authors are supporting the campaign, which asks fans of crime fiction to vote for their favourite writer. The author with the most votes will have the new morgue at Dundee named after them.

Professor Black said she was delighted to be welcoming Stuart MacBride to Dundee and to have him involved with the Million For A Morgue campaign.

'Stuart has been a tremendously enthusiastic supporter of our campaign from the outset, for which we are tremendously grateful," she said. "We can promise an evening to remember that will give us a fascinating insight into the mind of a master of suspense.'

Professor Black and other members of the CAHID team featured in the major BBC2 series 'History Cold Case'. The CAHID team have developed groundbreaking techniques in areas such as hand identification, which has directly led to the successful prosecution of a number of paedophiles identified from images of their hands found in obscene photographs and films.

The Centre also runs a major training programme in Disaster Victim Identification, which has trained police offers in practical techniques in human identification, enabling them to be deployed to help identify victims of mass fatalities anywhere in the world.

Dundee is the first University in the UK to adopt the Thiel method, which gives surgeons, dentists, students and medical researchers a more realistic method of testing techniques, practising procedures and developing new equipment and approaches

The Saturday Evening Lecture Series will celebrate its 88th Anniversary in 2012, and will run from later this month through to April. It is Scotland's oldest continuous free public lecture series. It attracts thousands of people each year to hear varied and thought-provoking lectures from prestigious, world-class speakers.

This tradition is continued in 2012, with talks from an exciting line-up of leading figures from the worlds of art, academia, literature and science.

Stuart MacBride's talk, 'Million for a Morgue', takes place at the Dalhousie Building from 6pm on Saturday, 4th February. A drinks reception and book-signings will follow the event. Overflow theatres may be in use, so be sure to arrive early if you would prefer to be seated in the main lecture theatre, as seating in the main theatre will be filled on a first come-first served basis on the night.

Tickets are available from the University's Online Store, by emailing events@dundee.ac.uk, or from the events office on 01382 385564.
