Dundee University student makes the cut in National Surgical Skills Competition

A medical student from the University of Dundee will represent the East of Scotland in a UK-wide Student Surgical Skills Competition, after winning the East of Scotland regional heat of the competition, which took place at Dundee School of Medicine on 6 November 2012.

22-year-old Debra Moore made it through to the Grand Final of the Competition after competing against her fellow medical students at Dundee by demonstrating a range of her surgical skills, from suturing a wound and tying surgical knots, to the surgical removal of a cyst using simulated skin pads.

Organised by The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd), the Student Surgical Skills Competition sees medical students from across the UK competing in regional heats to be in with a chance of making it through to the Grand Final in Edinburgh on 9 March 2013. The overall winner will win a trip to sponsors' Johnson and Johnson Medical Companies' European Surgical Training Institute in Hamburg later in the year.

Commenting on making it through to the grand final of the competition, Debra Moore said:

"I really enjoyed the regional heat. I found the stations interesting and a good range of basic and slightly more challenging stations.

"I am very excited to have made it to the finals. I think participation in the event will show my interest in developing my surgical skills and making it to the finals will reflect well on my skill level at this stage of my training. I think it would be an incredible opportunity for someone who is interested in developing their surgical skills to go to the Johnson and Johnson Training Institute in Hamburg!"

Explaining more about the competition, RCSEd Regional Surgical Adviser and Consultant Surgeon at Ninewells Hospital, Mr Sam Majumdar said:

"Providing education and training to the existing and future surgeons is a primary intention of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. The College has provided leadership in this field for over 500 years.

"We intend to encourage, inspire and nurture medical students and welcome them to the vast field of surgery with an abundance of wonderful possibilities. We want to see the surgeons of the future are wholeheartedly embraced into the family of the surgeons of the present time in order to maintain the highest degree of quality of service and care that we wish to continue to provide for our patients.

"As a regional surgical adviser I feel very proud to belong to The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and I wish all the very best to Debra for the next stage of the competition."
